This year, I have two Back-to-School nights, one for my son last night and one for my daughter on Thursday…
I look forward to these nights for a whole bunch of reasons, not the least of which is that my kids’ standard response to “how was school today?” is “fine” – which occasionally means “it was the best day of my life” but can also mean “I fell off the monkey bars during recess and spent an hour in the nurse’s office.” So needless to say, I am a little short on the details of their academic enrichment.
Somehow about 4 in 10 parents or guardians of children ages 5-17 (who will be attending a public or private elementary, middle or high school in the 2009-2010 academic year) find the time to meet their child(ren)’s teacher before the first day of school arrives (according to our recently completed study for GreatSchools). And, many also make other changes to their child(ren)’s daily life prior to school starting:
- 75% say they get their child(ren) on a sleep schedule
- 39% have their child(ren) start reading more
- 33% reduce the amount of time their kid(s) can watch TV and play video games
- 21% reduce the amount of time their kid(s) can go on the Internet
Perhaps next August…
